From the Magnificent Mind
Welcome one and all! This will be from the heart, and as the title suggests, the mind of yours truly, Too Magnificent Nicky Martin.
For those that don't know the story, MCW came to be officially on November 26th, 2010. There are many that know this story, but they may not know what led UP to the creation of what is now something in my life that I just can't live without.
I've been a huge fan of professional wrestling since roughly around 1986. (Yes, I realize I'm currently dating myself by advertising this) and no, you can't comment so shut up, and keep reading.
Growing up, wrestling was a huge escape for me. I wouldn't consider myself to have been close to too many in my school days. Not that I was a loner, but I just kind of did my own thing and tried to be good to everyone. That didn't always work however. There were days when I would come home, and I would turn on the TV and impatiently wait through an episode of World Vision Canada just so I could get a weekly dose of WWF Cavalcade.
I can also remember time and time again going to the local video store and spending HOURS trying to find the perfect video to rent, whether it be a WrestleMania, or a specific year of SummerSlam. It didn't matter. From the first time I watched wrestling, I was hooked.
I can remember the VERY first time I saw wrestling live. So much so that I can give you the exact date and tell you EXACTLY what we did prior to. It was in fact, the last day that I was ever on skates (And I still can't skate to this day, don't judge me.)
We came home, I went downstairs and laid on the couch and my dad came downstairs and dropped 4 tickets on my chest for a show that night at Copps Coliseum.
Needless to say, I screamed with excitement. I had begged my dad (who was not and STILL is not a wrestling fan) for years prior to go to a house show, and he had decided at some point to surprise me.
I have the pictures to this day tucked away in a keepsake box. From Skinner and Virgil in the first contest, to getting to see the larger than life Earthquake, to hearing the cackle of the Million Dollar Man, a man I credit for inspiring my own cackle alongside Jerry "The King" Lawler and "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart. All of those listed are heros, but I especially want to highlight Jimmy. 2011 I had the honor to meet and have dinner with him, and then work with him as we alongside another promotion in town presented a Christmas show. Listening to Jimmy tell stories the night before, was nothing short of amazing. There wasn't a minute that went by that he wasn't telling a story. The fan in me was losing it on the inside and I could have listened to him for hours. But it was after dinner that really stuck with me.
As we were getting ready to leave, Jimmy quietly asked another gentleman that we were with if he would mind driving him to a local hospital so that he could spend some time with the kids, prior to retiring to his hotel room for the night.
I was told that Jimmy spent HOURS that night just making kids smile, and that to me makes him a first class human being.
Back to late 2004, early 2005, I had ventured up to Cambridge, Ontario to the Hart School of Wrestling. Several times... Too many times even. I knew I wanted to be part of the business and at that time, it didn't matter to me how I was going to do it, I just knew that I was going to do it.
While the Hart School of Wrestling didn't work out for me wrestling wise (that's a whole other can of worms to open on another day). What it DID give me, was the opportunity to meet some epic people. Those people being PWA legend "Big Ticket" Reggie Marley, Ontario Independent Wrestling Manager Jessy Jones and a man who I consider to be an amazing friend and a mentor, in Eddie Osbourne.
Eddie would go on to promote his own company, the Pure Wrestling Association for years in Ontario and he was the one who gave me my first opportunity. I watched shows mostly at a local bar called Jay's Place and after every show, he would let me pick his brain and ask questions (And most likely annoy the living daylights out of him) but if that were the case, he didn't show it.
Years later, I would reach out to Eddie for advice on how to go about running my first show. A show that he would ultimately main event against another mainstay in Super Kamikaze for the MCW Championship on that night. As MCW didn't have championship belts made at that time, Eddie would step up and provide his championship to allow for one hell of a table match. If you would like to watch that match, you can do so here - https://youtu.be/5J9doQnEUY0?si=bK7RqRmIPcRhuW5D
That night, I had thought that show would be a one off, but after all is said and done, I knew that I couldn't live life without doing that again.... And again... And again... And now, he we are almost 15 years later.
I would go on to work as a manager not only at my own shows, but for Eddie at PWA and even for other promotions like TWA, CWF, and NGW just to name a few.
Another man who deserves a mention in my story is Rex Atkins. He is the man who gave me my first "paid gig" and I still have the bill framed proudly on the wall.
Show after show, I have had the privelege to meet and work with so many epic performers. I've learned, I've won, I've lost, I've made mistakes, I've learned from those mistakes, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I've learned my craft from amazing people and continue to learn every time I'm around ringside.
Some ask me who my heroes are in wrestling. As far as MCW goes, I get asked where I came up with my company name. The answer to that question is a simple one as I was a huge fan of Magnificent Muraco. They've asked me what or who made me want to be a manager. That is an even easier question to answer. The man who is my absolute hero in this business is Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. Now, I not only get to spend time down at ringside antagonizing the fans, but I get to channel Bobby with my good, long time, personal friend Phil Gordon on commentary.
Another highlight? Meeting the one and only Cody Deaner. A man who not only has shared his knowledge and given his time to help to make MCW and our shows better, but who has given countless hours to fundraise for charity in his Giv R For Charity campaigns. Cody is someone that I am honored to call a friend. If you would like to learn more about Cody Deaner and his charity work as well as all the other cool things he is doing, you can do so by clicking here: http://www.codydeaner.com/charity.html
And most importantly, the family aspect of things. I will keep this short and sweet, but a thank you is in order to one man who went out of his way to make sure that he was there that night, a man who decided to take a chance on a new promotion and he is a man that I am proud to now call family. Brother, you know who you are and I hope you know how much I appreciate you and all you do not only for me, but for family as well.
Promoting? I love it with all my heart. I've watched people like Eddie giving so many chances to those that have proven that they want and deserve it, and for me to be able to do the same for others is a blessing to me.
With all the said, I'll leave you with this - And you best believe I'll be back to my cackling, off the wall grumpy, obnoxious self in my next post as I have a reputation to uphold.
To everyone that told me that I wouldn't be able to do this or that in life, and to everyone who thought I wouldn't be able to realize my dreams, to everyone that left me with unkind words, who put me down and for those who didn't believe.... Take a look at me now!
For those that are struggling right now, to the ones that are striving for their dreams but may not have the support that they'd like, or who may not know which direction to go or how to get to the next level, to you I say, don't give up, keep fighting and keep your head up. You WILL get there, you WILL succeed, all you need to do is work for it! And don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Lord knows I wouldn't be where I am today without some of the absolute best people in the world coming to help me.
I bid you all adieu and remember... As a legend once said... A friend in need is a pest!
