Did Smackdown Deliver The Perfect Story?

It could be argued that last night's 3 Stages of Hell Main event on Smackdown is one of the best angles coming out of the Friday night staple in a LONG time.

For me, for the past while at least while watching SmackDown it seems that it is one match to the next with no real hook. No real reason to stay invested.

Now, for those that know me well, I am and forever will be a fan of the WWE, and futher to that, I very rarely complain regarding the weekly show offerings, but to be completely honest, some of the shows up to last night, in my personal opinion, felt a little flat.

Maybe it's the change from 2 hours to 3 again, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the last two weeks of programming. It's given talent more opportunity, it's provided fans with longer (and arguably better matches) and the story that concluded yesterday between Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre, was fantastic.

Growing up on old school wrestling, some of the best matches and some of the best stories, didn't necessarily center around big moves, or hard hitting action, but moreso the story to get there. Today's wrestling, seems to have lost that element.

There's been quite a bit of guy A bumping into guy B in the back, exchanging words and then a few minutes later we get a match announcement for next week. That's all fine, well and good. But it's the buildup that's missing.

I mean sure, having a match set up like that for two competitors that want nothing more than to try to one up each other is fine, but then there's no real reason to become invested in that match unless you happen to be a huge fan of whomever is involved.

Yesterday, we got a taste of something that I've missed of late and that is a full build up, mind games, heated exchanges, all resulting in a huge pay off.

What made last night's main event different? A big part was how personal everything became. Both Cody and Drew went above and beyond to create so much tension. The added intrigue of whether or not Rhodes would "throw it all away" for the chance to give McIntyre his comeuppance was just the right amount of hook to keep me and I'm willing to bet many others, coming back for more.

Now, by no stretch am I a fan of Cody Rhodes. I am however a huge fan of Drew McIntyre. Credit where credit is due, kudos to both superstars for giving me something back that I thought was long lost. I may not be a fan of both, but I am INVESTED!

The boys and girls in the back would do well to take from their story and learn from it. This writer is hoping for more! Definitely something I can get (and stay) behind!

What are your thoughts? Feel free to send us a mesage to let me know!
